Namib Road Kings event 30 May 2009:

Race day, some contestants arrived early and whilst marshals were still making last minute finishing touches, contestants Gazebos went up and everyone was getting ready.  The pit aria was busy, but registration went fluent.  A BIG thank you to the 15 contestants that sent in their entries during the week before, it just made things so much easier for us as organizers.  It was noticeable that it was going to be a very competitive day, you could feel it in the air.  The practice runs started and contestants lined up to test there vehicles.

Some new faces and cars were seen for the first time.  A 13 year old, Wiets Coetzee, showed up with a quad and for the first time ever, a quod started on the OMC track.  This young guy ran constant 13 seconds, and later we saw him having  allot of fun, racing against cars and other bikes.  He is now the official OMC Club record holder of the Quad bikes.  Congratulations and a Big thank you to young Mr. Coetzee for displaying such good sportsmanship.

Although only 5 motor bike riders attended, some good times were recorded by them.  Patrick Arlove ran a 10.69 on his Suzuki.  Times for the bikes were very competitive, with the top 3 only separated by 1 second.  The most important factor is that these bikes we very close, neck to neck, on most every run!!  Great riding ability were displayed, and the bikes were really well prepared.  We are looking forward to see these bikes in action on the 04th of July, on preparation of the event against the South Africans.

All the cars were looking good.  A VW Bug driven by Rudolf Turck, a first time contestant, were constantly improving his time and later ran a 16.2, beating all the Golfs!!  All the cars were tuned to maximum performance and some excellent racing took place between them.  The much improved Ford Escort of Johnny Wepener ran his best time ever and everyone was very pleased to see him constantly improving times since we have seen him for the first time in March.  To show how competitive the top riders were, there are only 2 seconds between the fastest 11 car contestants.

The first three contestants were only separated by 0.48 seconds.  The fastest time was recorded by Mr. G Visagie in the Roach with 12.35 seconds, second The Skiline of Dean Martin and The Hulk of Jaco Kotze was just slightly slower. All the cars went very well and fast times were recorded by every one.  De Waal, Lourens van Rensburg, Jaco Theron, Willem Visser, Marco Smith were all just separated by 0.4 seconds.  Earnu de Villiers and Frans Grobler in the V8’s also ran good times in the low 14 seconds. We would also like to thank Cymot for giving Mr. G the day off, to participate at our event.  All the cars were well prepared, and the contestants were very competitive.

The C.O.C., Mr. Ernest Thatcher did a superb job and the event went smoothly without any serous incident.    All the officials were well prepared and although we missed a few run times because of our electronic timing system being affected by heat, times recorded were very accurate.  Thanks to everyone who supported the Schools and Churches that supplied the food and drink for the event.

A Big thank you to The Hulk and The Roach for taking our special guests for rides.  Vicky from Radiowave and Hattie of HW Fuel supplies had a super time and really enjoyed it.  I bet both those ladies will never forget the experience, and will be attending Drag events for a long time to come.

A special THANKS to all of the sponsors, participants, spectators and officials that helped to make the “NAMIB ROAD KINGS” day a huge success.
